Spotify Audiobooks on iPhone: What's Included

Spotify Premium includes audiobook listening on some plans, not all. As of September 20, 2026, Spotify's support pages say Premium Individual, Premium Duo, and Premium Family (plan manager only) include 15 hours per month from the audiobooks subscriber catalog. Premium Student is not eligible. The hours are counted by playback at normal speed, they reset at the start of each billing period, and unused time does not roll over. If you want narrated books without a monthly cap, a library card or a dedicated audiobook subscription is the simpler fit.

Quick takeaway: Treat the included hours as a taste of the catalog, not a full audiobook plan. Check your remaining hours before starting a long book, remember that relistening costs hours again, and buy top-ups on the web because the iPhone app is not where Spotify sells them.

Which plans include audiobook listening time

Spotify's Audiobooks in Premium plans article lists the eligible subscriptions:

  • Premium Individual. The account holder gets the included hours.
  • Premium Duo. Only the plan manager gets audiobook listening time. It cannot be shared with the other member.
  • Premium Family. Same rule: the plan manager only.
  • Premium Student. Not eligible for audiobook listening time at all.

That last point trips people up. A student discount is the cheapest way to get Spotify music, but it does not include book listening. If audiobooks are the main reason you are considering Premium, compare the eligible plans rather than the student plan.

For Duo and Family, Spotify notes that the plan manager can purchase additional listening hours for plan members separately. The included allocation itself stays with the manager, so a household cannot split 15 hours four ways.

Spotify also maintains a separate concept called unlocking: some audiobooks can be purchased individually inside Spotify and listened to without touching your allocation. Those titles are not the same as the subscriber catalog, and the two lists change independently.

How Spotify counts audiobook listening time

The counting rule is the single most important thing to understand, because it is not obvious from the player. Spotify's subscriber catalog help page says listening time is counted based on each playback of an audiobook at normal speed. Two consequences follow:

  1. Changing playback speed does not change what you spend. If you listen to a 5-hour audiobook at 2x and finish it in 2.5 hours, Spotify still deducts 5 hours from your allocation. Speed changes how long you sit there, not how much time you spend.
  2. Relistening counts again. If you replay a chapter or restart the whole book, the counter drops by the normal-speed length of what you replay.

There is one useful exception. If you paid to unlock an audiobook separately, listening to it does not count toward your included hours or your remaining allocation.

Spotify also states that it may adjust the included allocation from time to time and will provide reasonable notice before changes take effect. That is another reason to check the account screen rather than trusting a screenshot from last year.

Your monthly allowance at a glance

The plan differences matter more than the headline number. This table reflects Spotify's help pages checked September 20, 2026.

Plan Monthly audiobook time Who can use it What happens at reset How to add more
Premium Individual 15 hours The account holder Unused hours expire; new hours arrive at the next billing period Audiobooks+ add-on, or a web top-up valid for 12 months
Premium Duo 15 hours Plan manager only Same monthly expiration Manager can purchase listening hours for the other member
Premium Family 15 hours Plan manager only Same monthly expiration Manager can purchase listening hours for members
Premium Student None Not eligible Not applicable Move to an eligible plan, or check Spotify's other audiobook options
Top-up purchase Variable Your own account Any time mid-month, after included hours are used Bought on the web; valid 12 months from purchase
Audiobooks+ add-on Extra hours monthly Premium Individual, Duo, or Family managers Add-on hours reset every month and are used after included hours Subscribe under Your Premium, Manage, Browse add-ons

Two rules from the table are easy to miss. Top-ups are deducted only after the monthly included hours are exhausted, and when the monthly allotment refreshes, consumption reverts to the plan hours first while unused top-up hours stay available until their 12-month expiry.

Finding titles that are included in Premium

Spotify labels subscriber catalog titles Included in Premium. On the iPhone:

  1. Open the Spotify app.
  2. Tap Search.
  3. Under Browse All, select Audiobooks.
  4. Browse featured titles or scroll down to browse by category.
  5. Open a title and confirm the Included in Premium label before you press play.

Catalog access varies by country, and Spotify says titles can change at its discretion or a rightsholder's. A title you saved last month may be gone from the subscriber catalog while remaining available to unlock. If a specific book matters, confirm it is included on the day you plan to start.

Offline listening and the hours counter

Spotify Premium supports downloads for offline playback, and downloaded titles keep playing when you lose the signal. The audiobook help page adds a warning worth repeating: there can be delays in tracking listening time if you pause mid-chapter or stay offline for an extended period. In practice, this means the counter in your account can lag behind reality. If you are about to fly with a long book, check the remaining hours while connected, and expect the app to reconcile later rather than in real time.

Cover the basics before a trip: download each part you plan to hear, confirm that the download finished, and listen to the first minute in Airplane Mode. A file that only streams will fail exactly when you cannot fix it.

Audiobooks+ versus top-ups

Spotify offers two ways to extend the month, and they suit different habits.

Audiobooks+ is a recurring add-on that adds extra listening hours every month. It applies to Premium Individual and to Family or Duo managers, is billed with your Premium subscription, is deducted after your included hours, and can be cancelled at any time. If you consistently run out mid-month, the add-on is the cheaper pattern.

Top-ups are one-time purchases of listening hours that stay valid for 12 months. Multiple top-ups can be stacked. They require an eligible Premium subscription, are used after the monthly allocation, and, per Spotify, payments can only be made through the web even though you can track hours in the app. If you only run out a few times a year, a top-up beats a monthly add-on.

One edge case: if you cancel your base Premium subscription, you lose access to add-on hours. Top-up hours remain attached to your account, but you must resubscribe within 12 months of the purchase to keep using them, and they still expire on their original date.

A five-minute monthly check

Run this routine at the start of each billing period so you are never surprised mid-book:

  1. Open your profile picture, then Settings and privacy.
  2. Go to Account and tap your plan name to open the plan overview.
  3. Select Track your included hours and top ups.
  4. Note the reset date and the hours remaining.
  5. Decide the month's listening: one long book, several short ones, or a library loan instead.
  6. Download what you need while on Wi-Fi for the month ahead.

On desktop, the same information lives on Spotify's Audiobook Listening Time account page.

When Libby or your own documents are the better answer

Fifteen hours is about one long novel. If you listen more than that, Spotify is a starter, not a home. Borrowing through a library app gives you free access to commercial audiobooks with no monthly cap, though popular titles have waiting lists. Our guide to audiobooks on iPhone compares the main routes, and the audiobook subscription comparison does the math for heavier listeners.

The second gap is content that was never published as an audiobook: your own PDFs, EPUBs, DOCX files, scanned pages, and saved articles. Spotify cannot read those. That is a document-listening job, not a catalog job.

Troubleshooting the common questions

The 15 hours look wrong

Unused time expires at the next billing period, and relistening counts again, so check both before assuming a bug. The account screen shows the reset date; compare it to when you listened.

A book is not in the subscriber catalog

Catalog access varies by country and changes over time. A title available to unlock is a separate purchase path and will not draw down included hours. Search the author or genre for a substitute if the exact title is not included.

The iPhone app will not sell me a top-up

That is expected. Spotify routes top-up payments through the web. Buy on a browser, then listen in the app.

Hours dropped faster than the book length

Did you replay a section, or listen at faster speed? Speed never reduces consumption, and repeats always count. The counter also lags when offline, so a jump can simply be delayed accounting catching up.

Where AudioPage fits

AudioPage covers the files Spotify never will. It imports supported PDFs, EPUBs, DOCX files, web articles, pasted text, and photos or scans, then reads them in a saved listening library. Core reading and listening are local-first, and the first voice setup needs an internet connection. Free supports up to 10 saved items, Lifetime Offline unlocks eligible local features, and Pro adds connected document summary, chat, and optional sync. AudioPage does not export MP3 files, is not an audiobook publishing tool, and runs on iPhone with no Android version.

Frequently asked questions

How many audiobook hours do you get with Spotify Premium?

Premium Individual, Premium Duo, and Premium Family plan managers get 15 audiobook hours per month from Spotify's subscriber catalog, checked September 20, 2026. Premium Student is not eligible, and unused hours expire at the next billing period.

Does listening faster use less of my Spotify audiobook time?

No. Spotify counts listening time by playback at normal speed, so a 5-hour book uses 5 hours even at 2x. Relistening to a book or part of a book uses your time again.

Can I listen to Spotify audiobooks offline on iPhone?

Downloads play without a connection, but Spotify warns that hour tracking can lag when you pause mid-chapter or stay offline for a long time. Check your remaining hours before you leave Wi-Fi.

What happens when my 15 Spotify audiobook hours run out?

You can buy a top-up on the web, which stays valid for 12 months, or subscribe to the Audiobooks+ add-on for extra hours each month. Your plan's included hours still refresh at the next billing period.

The practical answer

Spotify's included audiobook hours are a genuine perk on the right plan, as long as you remember the three rules: 15 hours per month on Individual, Duo, and Family manager accounts, normal-speed counting, and no rollover. Check the account screen before a long book, download before you travel, and reach for a library card or a document reader when the month's allowance is not enough. For your own files, AudioPage support is the starting point.
